13th month pay: budget it before December spends it for you

The 13th month pay lands in December, right when the sales, the parties and the Noche Buena shopping start. A 13th month pay budget decides where the money goes before it arrives. This guide gives you a simple split, a Christmas budget in pesos, and a January check on where the bonus actually went. Spenti, the app we use for the tracking part, is on iPhone (iOS 16 or later); Android is next, see the roadmap.

What the 13th month pay is, and when you should get it

The 13th month pay is required by law for rank-and-file employees in the private sector. It is at least one twelfth of the basic salary you earned in the calendar year. Your employer must pay it on or before 24 December, and some pay half of it earlier. The rules on who qualifies and what counts as basic salary are DOLE's, so read DOLE's questions and answers on the 13th month pay rather than a summary.

This guide does not cover tax. If you have a question about tax on your bonus, ask your employer or the official sources. Here we only plan how to spend it.

Decide before payday: a simple split

Money without a plan goes to whatever is in front of you. In December, that is a mall sale. So write the split down before the money lands, ideally in November. Four buckets cover most households.

  • Bills and debts first. Overdue bills, credit card balances and loans cost you interest every month. Paying them is a return you can count on.
  • Emergency fund. Put part aside for the January surprises: a hospital visit, a broken phone, school fees.
  • Ipon. A fixed share for savings, moved out before you shop, so it does not depend on what is left.
  • Pasko gifts and Noche Buena. The fun part, with a ceiling. This is the bucket the rest of this guide tracks.

The shares are yours to choose. What matters is that each bucket has a peso amount before 24 December, not after.

A Christmas and Noche Buena budget in pesos

Take the amount for the last bucket and break it down. List the people on your gift list with a peso amount each. Add the Noche Buena: ham, queso de bola, spaghetti, fruit salad, drinks. Add the extras that sneak in, such as Christmas parties, exchange gifts, Simbang Gabi snacks and the taxi home.

Then put the total into Spenti as a monthly budget for December, or as a weekly budget if you get paid every cut-off and want a tighter rhythm. Spenti alerts you as you get close to the limit, so you hear about it before the last week, not after. A budget you can see while you shop works better than a total you remember.

Scan mall and grocery receipts, and GCash screenshots, as you shop

A budget only works if the spending reaches it. Snap the receipt at the counter, or share the GCash or Maya screenshot into Spenti from your photos. Spenti reads the merchant, the total, the date and the category, then shows you the fields to check before you save. It reads on your phone by default, unless you choose your own AI on Pro. There is no Spenti account and no GCash or bank login, so there are no OTPs to share.

Two things to know. Spenti records what a screenshot shows; it never checks that the money arrived. And bank messages can become expenses too, through a Shortcuts automation on iPhone, but the Philippines runs on Spenti's general rules, not rules tuned bank by bank, so check what it reads. Money coming in is kept apart: a bank alert for money in, such as the bonus landing, is saved as Money in, which never counts as spending, and the recap then shows In, Out and Left. If you want the detail on how scanning works on the phone, read how Spenti processes receipts.

The Free plan covers 30 scans and 15 chat messages a month, and never expires. Manual entry is unlimited, so a small sari-sari purchase can be typed in seconds.

Watch the budget on your lock screen during the rush

December days are long and loud. You will not open an app between the tiangge and the grocery line. Add Spenti's widget to your home screen or lock screen instead. It shows how much of the budget is left each time you pick up your phone. That glance is often enough to skip one more exchange gift or a second round of drinks.

January check: where the bonus actually went

In the first week of January, open Spenti and tap the total for December to see the month's recap. Compare it with the split you wrote in November. Did the bills and the ipon get their share? Which category ran over: gifts, food, or the parties nobody planned for?

Write down one change for next year while the memory is fresh. On Basic and Pro you can also export December to CSV or Excel and keep it with your plan. Next November, you start from real numbers instead of a guess.

Frequently asked questions

When should I get my 13th month pay?

By law it is paid on or before 24 December. Some employers pay half earlier in the year and the rest by that date. For who qualifies and how it is computed, read DOLE's questions and answers.

Is the 13th month pay the same as a Christmas bonus?

No. DOLE treats the 13th month pay as mandatory for rank-and-file employees in the private sector, while a Christmas bonus is up to the employer. Budget only the money you are sure to receive.

Does Spenti tell me how much tax I owe on my bonus?

No. Spenti tracks your personal spending and is not a tax tool. For questions on tax, ask your employer or the official sources.

Do I need a GCash or bank login to track my Christmas spending?

No. Spenti reads the receipts and screenshots you give it, on your iPhone by default, with no Spenti account and no GCash or bank login. The Free plan gives you 30 scans and 15 chat messages a month and never expires.
